Hmm…are you a piler or a filer?

For years I found it more convenient to pile files than to file files (got that?).

I was one of those folks who knew where everything was on my desk and floor – and I mean that! However, since my floor space was starting to be a premium item in my office (like for my feet!), I decided to run down to my near by Staples and do something about it.

After decades of neatly piled items on the vast horizontal surfaces within my domain (all in arm’s reach or a short spin of my swivel chair…ok maybe a short ride) I just recently became a convert.

No, I’m not heading off to a new religious cult – eh…wait, maybe I am. Can one be considered a member of the Filer Sect? If that’s possible, then I’m now a full-fledged member of the House of the Vertical File. Yes my friends everything goes back into the cabinet as soon as I’m finished using it.

Ah the feeling! And…I’ve added new cabinets more than once over my short conversionary period.

Those stackable black and gray file cabinets are right up there in innovation with the Hubble telescope (ok maybe not quite, but they can be stacked almost to the moon).

More and more I’ve realized that organization leads to more organization, which leads to more foot space for me to do my walking around as I contemplate the universe.

Geez, I no longer need a running start in order to jump over a pile of neatly stacked hand-outs so that I can view the outside world from my windows.

So…if you suffer from lack of floor spaceitis as I did, take some advice from me and head over to your nearest office supply store and get yourself some (or some more) filing cabinets.

Buy a few hundred manila folders, some hanging folders and start labeling.

You’ll be amazed how much additional time you’ll save in the long run (even for a schedule management freak like me).

The fun alone is worth the price of admission…not to mention your new dance floor.

And…the feeling of being even more organized is exhilarating!
